Built in 1930 to the plans of architect E A Stone, the Prince Edward started life as a theatre; became a cabaret restaurant, the London Casino; the Queensbury All-Services Club during the Second World War; and a theatre once again in 1946. A diet of musicals, pantomimes and ballet followed for the next few years until Cinerama arrived in 1954 and it was converted into a cinema. In 1978, after a re-vamp and reverting to its original name, the Prince Edward re-opened with Evita starring a then unknown Elaine Page. Since then it has continued to stage successful musicals including Chess, Crazy For You and the recently opened Mama Mia!
