Designed by G H Holloway and built in 1891 for Richard D'Oyly Carte who brought Gilbert and Sullivan together, the theatre opened as the Royal English Opera House. In 1892 the new owner changed its course and renamed the building the Palace Theatre of Varieties. Whilst variety and revues proved proular for some years, the theatre eventually returned to its roots with the staging of many successful musicals and musical comedies. Included in the long list of productions is: No, No, Nanette, The Girl Friend, Anything Goes, The Sound Of Music, and more recently, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Les Miserables.
