Duchess Theatre

Designed in 1929 by Ewen Barr, the Duchess developed a reputation as an intimate home for many notable plays featuring such well-knowns as: Emlyn Williams, Noel Coward, Harold Pinter and Sybil Thorndike. The emphasis changed in 1971 when the theatre became hostess to the raunchy The Dirtiest Show In Town, followed in 1974 by the nude revue Oh Calcutta! which ran for six years. The theatre also boasts the record for the shortest run in history when the audience walked out before the end of the first performance of The Intimate Revue in 1930 and subsequent shows were cancelled.
