Designed by W Lewis and opened in 1930 as the New Victoria Cinema the theatre boasted a Mighty Wurlitzer and a single long balcony able to seat 2,500 people. In 1981, reversing the trend of the times, it was converted to active theatre, staging concerts by Shirley Bassey, Cliff Richard and Sammy Davis Jnr. During the alterations to accommodate the roller-skating ramps for Starlight Express the theatre lost 1000 seats and reopened as the Apollo Victoria in 1981.
