Historically, Gloucester was the retirement center for Roman soldiers and subsequently became an important commercial and religious spot. However in time due to difficulties in navigating the River Severn commerce declined and today it is a rather drab place compared with the nearby and delightful Cheltenham. But during its religious heyday in the middle ages Gloucester Cathedral was built and today enjoys a spectacular pride of place in the city. Like most of the country’s great cathedrals and churches what is now the finished product was added to and altered over a span of one or two centuries. The Cathedral is open daily. There are also museums and the Gloucester docks to visit which were developed over a 50 year period when the canal was built in 1827. The canal is still open today mostly for pleasure boats and for strollers alongside its banks.
