Remember that in the United Kingdom tax is included in the price you see (V.A.T. or value added tax.). The currency is now completely decimal, with coins in the units of 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, and £1. Notes are £5, £10, £20, £50. Try not to use £50 to pay for everything this unit of currency is considered much larger then the US 50 and is seen very infrequently compared to the US 50 dollar note.
Don’t be alarmed if when you pay for something the cashier writes on your note with a pen for this is just to check that the note is valid.
Also, unlike the United States and other countries people will be more vigilant about checking your signature when using a credit card, so do not take it as an insult, they are just doing their job.
