Horse Guards Parade is a ceremony which takes place daily as part of the changing of the guard which involves the two cavalry regiments of the Queen's Household Regiments. This is a better place to get a good view than outside Buckingham Palace, but it is equally popular so you need to get there early if you want a good spot. However, this ceremony is sometimes cancelled at very short notice, so it is wise to check first if you want to avoid disappointment. There are other specific ceremonies which take place at different times of the year, such as Trooping the Colour and Beating the Retreat, so it is a good idea to telephone about those, as tickets are required for some events
