Queen's Gallery

The Gallery is accessed off Buckingham Palace Road. It was constructed by John Nash, circa 1830, as a conservatory but in1843 was converted into a private chapel for Queen Victoria. Unfortunately it suffered extensive bomb damage in an air raid in 1940. But in 1962 the renovated building developed into a Gallery and commenced displaying parts of the Royal Collection of art to over 4 million visitors. The Collection is huge and many thousands of works of art have been shown although only a few are put on display at any one time. The Gallery is presently closed ( June 2000) for comprehensive redevelopment and is scheduled to reopen in the year 2002.
