The Museum of Garden History is set in the deconsecrated church of St. Mary-at-Lambeth. Back in the 17th century John Transcadent and his son, also John, were gardeners to Lord Buckingham and Queen Henrietta Maria wife of Charles I. They had brought back with them from their trips abroad many shrubs flowers and trees which they planted in the gardens of Hatfield House. The present owners of Hatfield House ( Lord Salisbury and his wife) have in commemoration of the Transcadents work laid out a Knot garden designed in the same way and planted with some of the same plants as existed in the Transcadents time. It is perhaps fitting that in the churchyard at the rear are the tombs of the Transcadents as also that of Captain Bligh of the “Bounty”. The Museum is closed from the second Sunday in December through to the first Sunday in March.
