Saffron Walden in
Essex

Located between Cambridge and London, Saffron Walden is the perfect stopover point. A greatly preserved city, Saffron Walden boasts sixteenth and seventeenth century houses still placed in their original medieval street pattern. The city prospered due to the cloth trade and the production of the Saffron Crocus plant, where yellow dye is extracted and used on the cloth and medicine. Towards the west end of the Saffron Walden is Repell Ditches, an archeological site where almost two hundred Saxon skeletons were discovered. This grand earthwork attracts many from all over the world.
Not far from Saffron Walden is the Audley End House, a magnificent building that has an impressive Great Hall with a spectacular seventeenth century screen. The rooms contain the works of Robert Adam, a large array of stuffed birds, and lovely eighteenth century furniture. The Audley End House also features a rose garden and a stable where a collection of agricultural machinery, old wagons and a vintage fire wagon can be found.
