Icklesham in
East Sussex
|
Located six miles east of Hastings, the town of Icklesham radiates with rustic English charm. The first known record of the town under the name of ‘Icoleshamme’ is a land charter from 772 AD signed by Offa, King of Mercia. Situated beside the River Brede, the town was a prime target for the Normans in 1066. On Icklesham’s Hog Hill, an old smock windmill stands. Restored and renovated, this windmill has been the recording studio of Paul McCartney. The top of the windmill offers a beautiful scenic view of the sea. Although Icklesham only has a few shops and public houses, peaceful paths through the countryside allow visitors to relax and enjoy nature. The back road going east from the town leads one to Winchelsea’s old medieval gates. An hourly Hastings to Rye bus goes through Icklesham, and the nearest station is Doleham near Guestling.
