At the southwest edge of the Cotswolds lies Amberley, a wonderful thatched village. In the eighth century, the village was part of Woodchester estate of Ethelbald of Mercia. In his charter, Amberley was called Sengledeah, which meant burnt clearing. The Norman Invasion had split the area in half, making the northern part into Amberley Parish and Rodborough.
